Firstly, a happy new year to you all. I hope you managed to spend some quality time with family and friends.

The festive period has been an even busier one than normal for the NHS, with the latest round of Industrial Action by junior doctors.

I would like to thank our NHS staff for their herculean efforts and for keeping people safe, and the public for continuing to use NHS services appropriately.

Although the junior doctors strike has just ended, the impact is expected to be felt for weeks to come, as services across Cheshire and Merseyside navigate the most challenging time of year.

With flu and COVID rates continuing to rise and cold weather adding to pressures on services, we expect to see more admissions than usual to our local hospitals.

To keep you and those around you safe, I would like to remind those who are eligible, to take up the offer of the COVID and flu vaccinations, and also to look after those around you, as we know January can be a difficult month for some.

As we look to the year ahead, we will continue to work collaboratively with our trusts and providers, to build on some of the work we have already begun to further improve services for the people that use them.
