How could AI strengthen primary care: Cheshire and Merseyside's AI in General Practice Conference
Wednesday, 9 July 2025

On Tuesday 20 May, more than 200 GPs, Nurses, Clinical Directors, and Practice Managers gathered for the AI in General Practice Conference—organised by NHS Cheshire and Merseyside and Howbeck Healthcare.
The conference aimed to explore the role that Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies could play in helping NHS primary care colleagues tackle current pressures, drive longer-term service transformation, as well as the importance of utilising innovative IT and AI in a safe, effective and efficient way.
The event featured presentations from experts in primary care and digital transformation, and demonstrations of AI tools from health technology sponsors, all reinforcing a key message: technology and AI are not here to replace general practice, but to remove inefficiencies and burdens that take clinicians away from what matters most—patient care.
The atmosphere was lively and collaborative, with delegates sharing ideas and connecting with colleagues, while exploring emerging technologies.
One of the standout sessions came from Dr Amar Ahmed , GP Partner at Wilmslow Health Centre, who shared his personal journey of integrating AI tools into everyday general practice. His insights were met with a strong, positive response from the room, as he offered a compelling glimpse into what the future of general practice could look like.
John Llewellyn, Chief Digital Officer for NHS Cheshire and Merseyside, acknowledged a common thread running through the day’s discussions: while the possibilities of AI are exciting, practices need practical support to implement these innovations safely, with queries around how AI will be governed, who holds responsibility, and where support can be found. A focused panel discussion on AI Safety and Governance provided helpful insights, and John assured delegates that NHS Cheshire and Merseyside is already working to strengthen its offer to support primary care teams in this area.
Conversations with AI software developers proved another highlight. Attendees explored the current capabilities of a selection of AI tools—such as managing lab results or processing documents—as well as future opportunities.
The day highlighted the importance of learning from early adopters and making digital expertise more accessible and actionable for every practice. By doing so, NHS Cheshire and Merseyside can be in a strong position to accelerate the safe, effective use of digital tools—providing real, impactful improvements for both patients and practices.
Dr Tom Micklewright, Clinical Lead for Digital Transformation in Primary Care, NHS Cheshire and Merseyside said:
“This conference marked an important step in how we think about the future of general practice.
“The energy in the room was inspiring—from the innovation being showcased to the honest conversations about safety, support, and patient care.
“It was encouraging to see so many colleagues ready to explore AI not as a replacement, but as a tool to strengthen the care we provide. The challenge now is to turn that energy into action, with the right support and guidance for every practice.”
After the success of the conference, NHS Cheshire and Merseyside and Howbeck Healthcare are hosting a follow-up event in Liverpool, at Aintree Racecourse on 9th September 2025, which will look at the developing impact of AI in Primary Care.
Tickets are limited but free to all NHS practice staff, and can be booked here.
